Wines Region Country Source Cost Comments
1. Cloudy Bay 2007 Pelorus
Marlborough
New Zealand Lay & Wheeler
£20
12.5% A full, yeasty, biscuit nose with some browning apple. Textured palate with a dry, gently warm finish.
2. Mount Difficulty 2013 Bannockburn Pinot Gris
Central Otago
New Zealand Majestic
£16
14.5% A powerful sweet-grapefruit nose with some fruit syrup aspects. A rich lychee approach with some melon and lemon-sherbet, full texture and a warm finish. Definitely not a shy and retiring wine!
3. Hiroyuki Kusuda 2013 Riesling
Martinborough
New Zealand Lay & Wheeler
£26.60
12% A mineral, engine oil nose. Steely-dry acidity on the palate with a touch of lime cordial.
4. Marisco The Exemplar 2012 Viognier
Marlborough
New Zealand Majestic
£25
13% The nose was more like an oaked Chardonnay; nutty, sweet with a slightly charred aspect and a hint of sauerkraut. It had a caramel approach and a heavy texture that coats the palate, rich and oily, smooth but lacking enough acidity to freshen it up and with a touch of heat on the finish.
5. Kumeu River 2011 Hunting Hill Chardonnay
Kumeu, Auckland
New Zealand Lay & Wheeler
£22
14% A touch of struck match to the nose and slightly charred component on the palate. Acidity makes its presence felt immediately with very zesty, citrus component all the way through and underneath a toffee-caramel sun-layer. A little ageing to soften the acidity should give a very good wine.
6. Jackson Estate 2011 Somerset Pinot Noir
Waihopai Valley, Marlborough
New Zealand Majestic
£22
13.5% Perfumed prunes with a touch of iodine. Ripe fruit goes to rubber and tar. Colour suggests and older wine. Soft, fruity palate showing aspects of quality, moderate tannins and acidity – briary fruit.
7. Te Whare Ra 2010 Syrah
Marlborough
New Zealand Lay & Wheeler
£22-26
13.5% A dark, umami nose; soy, tar and savoury spice. Graphite tannins with dry, edgy fruit. Medium bodied with coffee components which turn into a dark roast in the glass, although it finishes short.
8. Saint Clair 2013 Pioneer Block Malbec
Gimblett Gravels, Hawkes Bay
New Zealand Majestic
£15
13% A sugar-sweet, red fruit nose. Good acidity with sweet, gentle fruit, an enjoyable texture and savoury aspect. Dry, some graphite, with fresh fruit and acidity, youthful but good.
9. Craggy Range 2011 Te Kahu
Gimblett Gravels, Hawkes Bay
New Zealand Majestic
£16
13% Soft, gently perfumed nose, some cloves. Cool, minty approach with a light attack going into a balanced and quite refined palate. A touch of austerity, acidity masking the fruit a little.
10. Escarpment 2011 Hinemoa Riesling
Martinborough
New Zealand Majestic
£11 (35cl)
9.5% Herb and floral nose, some lemon thyme. The palate is lightly sweet, syrupy with a touch of lime. Honey and beeswax flavours with good acidity to the honeyed finish.
