Wines Region Country Source Cost Comments Type
1. Camel Valley 2012 Pinot Noir Brut
Cornwall England Cellar door £26.95 12.5% A delicate nose and refreshing on the palate; very tart - like biting into unripe apples - and a touch of light liquorice on the finish.
2. Les Ruettes 2013 Sancerre
Loire France Marks & Spencer £13.99 12.5% A matchstick/flint nose, a subtle Sauvignon with good attack and mid-palate, tart acidity and a touch of nettle on the end. It lacked overall weight and went flabby on the finish.
3. Bolney Estate 2013 Foxhole Vineyard Pinot Noir
Sussex England Cellar door £15.99 11.5% A strawberry and cream nose with a fruity approach. Dry tannins built up at the edges and into a fruity mid-palate with a dry finish. A bit young, but one of the better English Pinots.
4. Baron de Ley 2007 "Finest" Viña Mara Gran Reserva
La Rioja Spain Tesco £10.49 13.5% Dark in colour. The nose was classic Rioja, ripe and sweet with some mushroom and menthol showing age. The approach was quite light, lifted with integrated tannins and some coffee on the finish – overall a fresh and elegant wine.
5. Morgenster 2003 Estate Wine, Stellenbosch
Coastal South Africa S.A. Wines Online £40 13.5% A fresh, meaty nose with blackcurrant and menthol, then a touch of Bovril. On the palate there was fresh blackcurrant fruit with moderate tannins and good length around plenty of well-toasted oak, giving a strong Mocha/Coffee aspect.
6. Julia Kemper 2010 Touriga Nacional
Dão Portugal Halifax Wine Co. £22.95 13.5% Even darker than the Viña Mara and showed sweet, almost candy fruit on the nose. Moderate tannins were still a touch young but this was already an elegant, lovely wine.
7. Domaine Jean-Luc Colombo 2010 La Louvée, Cornas
Rhône France Berry Bros. £65 13.5% Equally as dark as the Touriga, if not more so, with a nose was of ripe, dark fruit. Cool at the front of the palate and on the finish, this was a crisp, tannic wine which could handle some bottle age.
8.  De Bortoli 2008 "Finest" Dessert Semillon, Riverina)
New South Wales Australia Tesco £6.79 10.5% A lovely, golden colour, syrupy sweet on the palate. Luscious and velvety smooth there was a very long toffee finish, maybe lacking a bit of acidity or complexity, but delicious to drink.
